Using Gesso for mortar

Usually I use Roberts Mortar Mix but I have a lot of Gesso and thought I'd try it. Didn't work well for me so maybe I'm doing something wrong. I used it straight out of the Jar and it didn't wipe off very well with a damp rag. If you've used it for mortar did you thin it? What am I doing wrong?

Gesso is a primer and as such tends to "grab" the surface more than an ordinary acrylic paint. That would make it more difficult to wipe off, so it really isn't the best choice for mortar applications IMO.
