Hi,

I picked up a pair of Hillsdale tunnel portals this past weekend to use on my layout.  Obviously I do not want to get any tunnel material on the portals themselves, how have folks utilized the poratals in the past?  Do I build the tunnel openings and then slide the portals into place or is there a better method?  I noticed that there are slots in the bases that I can use to screw the portals into place so that they do not fall over, I guess the trick would be to build the openings in such a way so that I can still get a screwdriver in there to tighten them down.

As always I am grateful for any and all input.

Kevin,

These aren't Lionel portals, but the technique would be the same. I attach my scenery forms (cardboard strips) directly to the portals with hot glue, and then cover with plaster gauze.

A few rock castings are added and the gauze is covered by another thick layer of plaster for strength. That is the time when I have to be careful not to get plaster on the portal detail. A wet rag removes errant globs of plaster pretty well.
