This is completely speculative, but do you guys think making variations in todays trains would catch on.  For instance all the postwar variations are well sought after. Companies didnt change the function or features so its not like your getting cylinder steam where all the other engines dont. Just " no new york zone or different color lettering.  The baseball card industry fell off a cliff and this is what made them thrive today.  Samething is happening in other hobbies and its a huge hit everytime. Hobbiest go crazy over it.  Its really the hunt is what really drives the fun and passion.  For instance the big boys coming out if 1000 made have 100 with the engineer in red and the other 900 in blue.  I know thats not the greatest example but im sure the companies will have some great.  Anyway sorry for the long post but wanted to see if you guys thought this was good for hobby, so-so or trash.
Thanks, Blackout

For many collectors, the challange of finding desired items is what the hobby is all about. But hunting for newly manufactured items whose availability was manipulated by the manufacturer to drive up prices does not sound like fun to me.

There are plenty of trains and related stuff that is genuinely difficult to find. And it isn't all expensive.
