Ah, Phil. Haven't heard from you in a while.
We were using 4.2 at the club up until a week ago. There supposedly was some issue with "lash-ups", but in talking with the other members it was clear that I was the only one doing them anyway so I stayed late and upgraded the club's TIUs and remotes, then caught up with the members' remotes as they came in.
Observations so far:
- So far, it does seem more stable in Super TIU mode than 4.2. Finding engines already in the remote seems to work better and test adding on the layout rather than the test track seemed to work more efficiently
- Engines seem more responsive than under 4.2. We have some weak spots due to multiple feed drops (which we're hunting down) but we seem to have fewer of them.
- Lash-ups seem more stable than with 4.2. One problem with 4.2 under Super TIU mode was if there was a derailment, I'd lose an engine in the lash-up and couldn't retrieve it unless I put the lash-up back in the same TIU zone where the lash-up was created. then selected/restarted each engine and started the lash-up. This seems to have been eliminated for the most part in 4.3.
- Reliability is a long-term thing and since I've only been playing with it for two weeks, I'd have to post a follow-up.
I don't see any real disadvantages in upgrading other than having to crawl under the layout to plug into the TIU. I had to do seven, including the setup track and three of them were underneath so I had some "hands and knees time". I felt it was worth it.
I'm anxiously waiting for 4.31 as there were supposedly some bugs introduced into 4.3 (I haven't found them), but I don't see that happening until after the WiFi units and Apps show up in November. I've already installed a router at the club which is currently supporting Legacy WiFi within the network. The plan is to put our six TIUs into the network and, in theory, they should all play nice since they'll have different addresses.
