room & P&R LVRR 001The space available for my train room is on the top floor - at the peak - of our "A-frame" home.

The room is 17 ft long x 13 ft wide (at the floor) but the 17 ft A-frame walls come together at

the roof peak - 9-1/2 ft up.  I have created a false ceiling at 8 ft in order to have

better insulation/lighting/vent fan, etc.  While I continue to prep the room for trains

I am wondering how to treat the walls scenically as the walls are also part of my ceiling.

Also the higher I make the layout, the less width I have for train operations.  If anyone

has encountered this geometry and had a good outcome - I'd be grateful for the input.

Thks, Rich

Hey Rich,

There a few photos of layouts in rooms like this on the forum.  (see dewey trogdon's, 1/26/16 post photos)

Most build a narrow table around the walls. Find the spot at 30-36 inches high perpendicular to the floor and then measure 30" from the side. Does it leave enough aisle.

Lost space is the perpendicular from the table to angled wall where there is enough clearance for the trains. Can't put the tracks on the wall side edge of table.

I would paint the angled walls all sky. You could backdrop the end wall or paint something to create a vanishing point and make the space appear longer.

You are fortunate to have a steep pitch on the roof.  The steeply sloped ceiling will allow you to have taller structures toward the rear of the layout.  You will also be able to run any track closer to these sloped areas and still not have to worry about the trains clearing them.  I agree with Carl, an around the room layout looks like the best choice for your space.

Judging by the picture you posted I would presume you have almost 8' between the sloped walls at a height of about 3' off the floor.  If you allow a 3' platform on each side that would give you a 2' isle.  Plenty of room to maneuver.
