Do any of you have decent-sized areas of your layout that are devoted to water scenes that allow you to walk across that surface for access purposes?  How did you model that particular area so that you could walk on that surface and not "damage" the water?  Can you do it without cracking the surface or otherwise ruining it?  Would be very interested to hear your suggestions on particular surface materials, water products, or other techniques that would allow this.

I have also read of some people making the water area drop out or hinge open downward.

I expect modifying a layout to do this after construction and with water in place is much harder.

To walk on it I would make a plate of 1" plywood with a felt backing to place on the water. Perhaps even a double thick one if the water surface is pliable.

Now that sounds interesting!  And what, my I ask, were you painting over?  A plain wood surface?  Some kind of plaster?

To those who were suggesting lift-out type solutions, I should've mentioned at the outset that it's way too late for that unfortunately.  This has to be done on an existing, permanent horizontal surface.
