Well, Key has dropped out and Wasatch is taking over with the same Korean builder who made the Key Cab Forwards and is currently building European passenger cars for the, wait for it, European market.

Here are the current prices;

Baggage  15-------------     $1,400
Dome Coach 40 ------------ $1,660
Dome Dorm 15-------------- $1,660
Dining 15-------------------- $1.550
16 Section Sleeper 15----- $1,550
6/5 Sleeper  15-------------- $1,550
10/6 Sleeper 30      -------- $1,500
Dome Observation 20—— $1,800

And for all of you who feel the over whelming need to make negative remarks about the prices,  just don't reserve them and go away.  You're not in this market anyway.

Richard

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I often am, but the California Zephyr never ran under a single road name correct?  It was a combination of the three major roads, plus through sleepers from the PRR and NYC wasn't it?

As much as I'd like to think I am in the market for this level of quality and train, my wife will tell me otherwise.  My Sunset E5 will have to wait for something closer to my pay grade.

You're 100% correct Jonathan. I am likely the only one hunting a one-named set (CB&Q nut). While I know it is not prototypical and looks wrong, I can't help but run one of my favorite roads in a single roadname.

I'd be posing the same question to Scott if he was running a set.

Not exactly. Yes, every car carried the name "California Zephyr" in the car's letter board, however at the ends of every car were the individual railroads initials that owned THAT car, i.e. "CB&Q", "D&RGW" and "WP". Thus, a modeler could, in fact, operate a complete CB&Q California Zephyr, with ONLY CB&Q designated cars with their proper names (CZ passenger cars did NOT carry numbers).

During peak season or for tour groups, it wasn't unusual for "alien" cars to be in the CZ consists.

Plus, the Pennsylvania did own a matching Budd 10-6 sleeper, Silver Rapids.

Rusty

Confirming what Rusty said in his post above, I rode the eastbound California Zephyr in July of 1964 (I was 13 years old at the time) and because it was the busy summer season, we were assigned to a Chesapeake & Ohio 10 Roomette/6 Double Bedroom sleeper, “City of Grand Rapids” (#2636), (Pullman built) which was in the consist that day, rather than a regular CZ car.  I recall my mother being disappointed since she didn’t think it was as nice as the Budd stainless steel cars.

All Rapid series sleepers are PRR cars.  That much I know.   I don't want to derail this thread, but I am in the market for a mixed secondary CB&Q train for my E5.  Something with lots of head end cars and a blend of heavyweights and streamlined cars with Burlington in the main letterboard.

I'll now return everyone to the regularly scheduled thread on a train that will turn out in every way the Atlas offering did not.

The photos illustrate Gotthardbahn cars for Fulgurex in Gauge 1;  I had leapt to the conclusion these were 0 gauge.  I only know this because I was wondering what importer was crazy enough to do these again in 0 considering the Fulgurex GB cars by Tenshodo are, relatively speaking, generally available.

Thank you for that information; casts a somewhat different light on the subject.

I’m waiting for Scott to post/re-offer the E5s and 6s in run 2.  Too many to buy in run 1 for me so I’ll be able to get My E5 in run 2 !!!!!   I’m guessing we won’t see this offering till after he closes the EA, E1 offering.

Thanks!  I wondered what they were.  I think they are pretty amazing.

As for timing, your guess is at least as good as mine.  I do know that the plans have all been approved and the builder, quantities and prices have been agreed upon.   Just need to get them in the queue and done.

If anyone can pull this off, Roger can do it. He's already put a lot of work into this project and has his "hands on" inspection schedule figured out as well. He's done a lot of work behind the scenes for KEY over the years and his Wasatch UP passenger cars are icons and still stand up to the best of the best passenger cars today.

He needs more reservations to make this run possible, so if you have an interest please contact him.
