Happy Friday!

Some early Christmas themed photos from the Trainfest Show held last weekend (11/11 - 11/12) in Milwaukee. The show was packed by the way too.

Here is MTH's display layout showing their Christmas train. I really liked their lighted flat cars with Christmas trees. These are LED-lit cars that get powered from the track, with a regulator that operates the lights from ~ 5 to 18V, good for conventional or DCS operation. MTH's Sales VP, Rich Foster, said these are getting hard to find at LHS - they're selling that well.

This one is just cool. A scratch-built O-scale model similar to the real service station,  "The Bomber" Gas Station, a Texaco Station, in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Not exactly a B-17, but close enough! Nice work on the gas station!

BTW, I read recently that the B-17 is supposed to be taken down from the roof top and restored. Any truth to that?

Edit: I have confirmed that the bomber, named Lacey Lady, was removed from the gas station in 2014, and taken to Aurora for restoration. The published intent is to get it flying again. Whether or not that happens depends a great deal on if the necessary cash can be raised. One estimate put the cost of restoration in the $4 million range. With work completed on  Mifflin, PA, I finally began work on the town of Port Royal. This is a very complicated project because of the many different elevations of structures, and grades on the roads. Also have to deal with clearance issues under the model of the vintage 1910 concrete arch bridge  spanning the tracks well known to railfans of the Middle Division. Although I had the structures on hand to lay out in planning the town, the one thing I did not have was a model of the bridge which will need to be scratchbuilt. However, given the tight fit, I did not want to build the actual model, only to find that it has geometrical issues such as insufficient clearance for the trains. 

For that reason, I did something that I generally do not do...and that was to build a mockup. It is constructed of foam core, and has all of about 5 dollars of material in it. But it is really helping me to lay the scene out correctly, and I can already see a few minor dimensional changes that will need to be made.

Images include a map of the town, a recent photo of the prototype, then several showing the planned location of the structures with everything just sitting up on wood scraps. My guess is that the scene will take about a year to construct.

Here is one other photo unrelated to my prior post that I took while setting up Port Royal. It's grainy and not well lit, but shows the wide prototypical reverse curves that I like to use on the layout. The F-3's are early MTH PS 1.0 units upgraded to TMCC and then superdetailed by my son Steven. Note the fixed pilots and Kadee couplers. Other features are the cinder roadbed, sharp ballast edges typical of the pre-1960 era, pole line, and an elevated relay case off to the right. Hoppers are from Weaver with real coal loads and weathering done by my son.

Have been working on my Canadian Pacific Holiday train for a couple of years, here is plex-glass I had etched so I can shine RED LED lights in the sides to light the words for the side of the box cars. Still have to work on blocking the light bleed out the ends. You might try this if you have the new MTH light up trains! 

And some shots of my layout at the local model train show. Had 13 Lion Chief controls on the fence for kids to run the trains, and several other buttons to operate various animated accessories and sounds. 24x40 feet. Thomas theme, Chuggington, Hogwarts, large loops in the middle with long circus trains. The show was packed with kids all along the fence running trains.

And here are some shots of Radiator Springs, with the new "Cars 3" Movie out last week I thought this was the perfect time to show my layout with the new Mattel Precision series lighted buildings. The neon light show on these is stunning, with the added power supplies you can set the light shows to keep running all day. The various lights fade in and out for stunning effects on the buildings.r1r2r3r4r5r6r7
