New Haven Railroad Ten-Wheeler 4-6-0 #816 is a Lionel Legacy model that has become a favorite of mine. I just like to let it run and listen to the steam sounds and whistle. Although this model says “New Haven,” it is actually a model of a New York Central Class-F locomotive.

This week I'll go back to regular posts showing work on the layout.

Work has been underway on a large URBAN area (not one of my usual rural scenes) for some time, specifically the city of Altoona, PA. Much of the city consists of three dimensional building flats that protrude half an inch to two inches or more from the backdrop. However, a last minute design change meant shifted the tracks too close to the backdrop along a curve, and there was just no way to fit in any three dimensional structures. See the following image:

So since backdrop painting is one of my favorite parts of the hobby, I made an executive decision to paint the buildings on the curved area of the backdrop. The following pictures show the project in progress, including the transition with the three dimensional structures and the work in progress. Keep in mind that the project is NOT completed. I still have to add more building details, some streets, trees, and finally apply a matte agent to remove the shine. But thought it might be of interest.

It is late 1949 and a F3 ABA consist is moving a mixed freight to eastern destinations.  These two year old engines are Phase 2 Late, the first F3 with the low pan top radiator fans.  When the Pennsy first ordered these, they were still buying ABBA sets based on their projections that 6,000hp was needed for most operations.  It did not take long before Pennsy management determined ABA consists were adequate.

I really like these 3rd Rail models.  I had not bought a PRR F3 before because, except for some older high end brass models, those available from Lionel/MTH/Williams had incorrect number boards.  While most railroads used the larger rectangular number boards you see on nearly all F3/F7 models, 3rd Rail added the correct small, streamlined number boards.  Thank you 3rd Rail.

More photos below.  Have a great and safe weekend.
