Specifically, I'm referring to Lionel TankTrains.  As many of us now know, Lionel has introduced several 2-packs and a 3-pack along with a new Oil Can set in 2012 Vol 2.  One would think that -- with these new rolling stock due out next Summer in the $56-$59 street price range -- prices of existing TankTrain cars on the secondary market would drop like flies.  Or so you'd think.

Well, tonight I noticed two GATX TankTrain cars (one white CN and one black GATX) go for slightly over $100 each!!!  The seller started the bidding very low... so it was purely aimless bidding that drove the winning bid up over $100 in both cases.

Perhaps some folks don't yet realize new cars will be arriving on the scene relatively soon.  Nonetheless, there's a big difference between $120/car and $59/car.  It's not as if we're in a "collectors market" where having cars from several years ago vs. those due out next year would mean all that much.  I would think most operators don't care.

Just puzzled about people some days...

That's one point to keep in mind when looking at e-bay prices for an individual item - and I've been guilty of something like that in the past myself.

One has to keep in mind that prices paid in such situations are not indicative of the entire market.  All that has to happen is that for a period of time one person creates a demand equal to or slightly greater than the supply of a niche item, and the price climbs a bit.
