The Gateman. The one in the video has been in the family for over 60 years and he's never missed a train!
I have to go with the pre-war 165 Magnetic Crane and the post-war 182 Magnetic crane. Both provide a ton of play value.
The TMCC crane and boom car. Coolest thing Lionel ever made
The culvert twins. They are a statement of a life to be avoided: Load the culvert, unload the culvert, load the culvert, unload the culvert,...
That is very hard to pick just one. Id have to go with the coal tipple, forklift loader, and oil drum loader for top 3. Sorry just couldn't pick one.
Intermodal operating crane.

It's the American Flyer Oil Drum Loader repro.

The #362 Barrel Loader. A clever mechanism and great fun to watch in action.
I agree with you Bob. The Fork Lift Unloader leads the way ahead of my Culvert Unloader/Loaders and Saw Mill. Don't forget the Ice House Loader or the operating Water Tank.
I've always liked the animated news stand along with the the operating gateman. The 97 coal loader is right up there too.
I like many of them but I agree with others that the forklift is my favorite too primarily due to its reliability.

The 445 switch tower, probably because a friend had it on his layout back in the 50's. The towerman watches for the train from the balcony, then goes down the stairs to meet it when it arrives (probably to hoop up the train orders). The photo is from postwarlionel.com.
Lionel 455 oil derrick.
The Bascule bridge, although it is a shelf queen and I don't have a place for it at present.

That reminds me that I also have a Hellgate bridge sitting on the shelf. I had to have it but I haven't found a place for it yet.

The recent remake of the old 313.
For me, in first place is the Hot Air Balloon Ride. Soooo cool. But plastic gearing, so I run it sparingly. Huge crowd pleaser.......especially when they notice the other balloon on the opposite end of the layout. In second place, I'd have to say the Nuclear Reactor. I made a modified gondola to receive and deliver the two kinds of "pellets" and flashing hazardous waste containers front and rear. Another crowd pleaser. Both very unique and uncommon accessories.

I don't have a lot of them, but the new command control Gantry Crane is my favorite and I think it's also my grandsons favorite, Next would be the command control Culvert Loader & Un-loader pair.
I like the gantry crane so well I am wishing I would have also gotten the new stationary crane and the Crane and Boom car set. Those may be on the 'things to add list' before long.
Guess I am having trouble with picking just one as well...
From the post war era I like the 313 Bascule Bridge and the !82 Crane.

Totally agree! Especially setup as an operating "diorama" with programable controller with sound tender or at least the cabin from the tender near by.
Although some might not consider this an accessory because it is too simple and does not have the excitement factor of some other accessories mentioned here, I vote for the postwar Lionel 153 signal. The Lionel 153 signal was among the first accessories I received as a kid plus I always enjoyed the colorful green and red lights. Today I still enjoy this accessory which is always in use.
The icing station. Fort accessory I bought. I love to fill the cars up
Lionel's postwar #464 Sawmill. You've got action AND sound, and visitors always ask if it's really sawing the logs ("I can hear the buzzsaw").
dont remember the number but for me its the oil derrick

I just acquired one of these (my first one) for my PW layout and really enjoy it. The “log sawing” action is indeed fun to watch and is definitely a crowd pleaser.
The fact that you have to “reload” it means making sure you have it in an easily accessible spot is a must.
For me, it was the 97 coal loader and AF`s Gabe the lamp Lighter, ton`s of fun from both
So many great options, but I have to go with the TMCC crane car and boom car. Tons of fun and great sounds matched to the action. The big hook is on the job!!!

For me it was the 151 for exactly the same reason.
The 213 and 313 are the coolest though. Real versions were around when I was kid and still exist today.

The 264 Lumber Unloader.....but, it is really so hard to pick just one!
Peter
I love all of my postwar and modern accessories, but my all time favorite is the
#264 Operating Forklift Platform!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like the forklift has several fans.

If I had to pick one, it would be the 129 terrace with the 124 Lionel City station. The 300 Hell Gate Bridge is a close second for me.
Lionel's Rocket Launcher including the countdown & launch cube + the Radar Antenna.
Just something about those two accessories ....
