Since I received my second set of visionline UP/SP PFE cars what smaller engine would have pulled a smaller consist? Would a GP 7/9 or a GP35 be technically correct? I looked on the web and could not find any answers.

Just about any switch engine between the yard and the consignee's siding. Street running you'd have to consider clearance in the urban curves. Few if any in line haul. John in Lansing, ILL
In my youth I worked in Berkeley next to the SP tracks. In the summer I remember train after train of PFE cars coming from south of San Jose heading east. First there were trains headed by cab forwards. Later it was F units and GP or SD 7 and 9s. More recently it would have been SD 40 and 45. I would not think a GP 35 would have been involved. Locally I would think 2-6-0, 2-8-0 and 0-6-0 or any of the common Alco, Baldwin or EMD switchers. The VE handled a lot of fruit with a 44 toner.
Sorta depends on what you are modeling....a local collecting cars from shippers, or a transcontinental heading for Chicago.
