I am a Lionel guy and I am thinking of adding MTH DCS and I have obtained a TIU that I assume is a very old version. How can I tell what version it is and more importantly, can it be upgraded? If so how do I do it.

Yep it can be upgraded,
To find out the hardware version of the tiu, just turn it over,,,There should be some marking on the bottom... If none it's one of the very early ones from about 02.
Software.... You need a remote. just turn it on the software version is displayed on the screen. The tiu probably the same but you can check it out by turning the tiu "on" and going to Menu/System / tiu set up/ Tiu version.
Thanks Gregg, it must be an early version I do not see anything on the bottom. Right now it's in a box with the remote. They were packaged together.
Make sure you put a fuse in the line. That version has no internal fuses. If you have a newer transformer like the Z-4000, it shuts down so fast if there's a short that the fuse would be just extra insurance against TIU damage.
