I do to I will never forget the day.I went to the liberry and read a book about trains. At the very last page was a picture of 765.She was on the TP&W pulling modern 50ft boxcars. The picture was taken at sunset. So you had a real nice picture. And thanks to that berkshires will have a special place in my heart.Originally Posted by Doug N:

Good god  that t3 tender is huge!!I had no idea the t3 was so big.The real thing had to be a heavy mountain type. There is no way that can be called light.Originally Posted by jd-train:

For the B&O, it would be my 3rd Rail T-3 and my K-line Mikado.  Here is the T-3:

The steamer that I run the most is my Lion Master Cab-Forward.  These are such cool locomotives.  I re-lettered mine for Lionel Lines and am currently working on a matching auxiliary tender.

After having left O guage for a while, I'm back and while I have a few more diesels to my name, I've been using my steamers a lot recently. My favorite has to be my newest, the Lionel conventional 4-4-2 Atlantic. The smoke unit needed some attention at the local service station (a very pleasant and reliable place) but it runs extremely well and I think it's really nicely done. I have a Lionel tank engine that runs like a top and a very nice MTH O-27 Hudson which I bought used from a shop (I don't know how old it is) and it really runs smoothly with a big whistle and clouds of smoke. The first thing I bought when I was getting going again was an Industrial Rails Set. The engine now needs some attention but it might still be under warranty. It was a nice little runner for about a year with a big bell, decent smoke production and a whistle that I can sort of hear. Maybe it will be again. It's a smaller version of the Atlantic.

The only two steam engines I have are still sealed in their cartons, waiting for the end of summer ....

Legacy Mikado ... that I'm going to re-decal into East Broad Top

Legacy Polar Railroad K-4 ... that I just bought from Nicholas Smith

(other than the under-the-tree dedicated 2046 that's been in our family since 1951 ??)

This is a tufty....Favorite main line engine. Lionel K4 I have a weaver K4 and a K-line K4.

My how the roster has changed in just a few short months. Still dedicated to the N&W alphabet soup of steam, with a few turbines tossed in just for fun.

My operating steam fleet includes the following

*MTH Railking Imperial K4s 4-6-2 (Proto2)

*MTH Railking Imperial B6 0-6-0 (Proto3)

*MTH Railking Imperial Y6B 2-8-8-2 (Proto2)

*MTH Railking L1 "Yellowbelly" 4-6-4 (Proto2)

I also have a Lionel Pennsy Flyer 4-4-2 but I do not run it. It is still operational. I also have a K-line Allegheny (non-operating), an MTH PRR 2-8-0 (non-operating), and an MTH Imperial Railking USRA 0-6-0 (non-operating).

I would say I run them all pretty much the same except the 4-6-4...that engine finds every little dip in the track and regularly gets stuck just spinning its wheels with good, new traction tires, and a very short train. All occur on very slight dips in the track. All other steam locomotives run on the layout without ANY issues. That Hudson is VERY picky!

Wow - this is an interesting thread to bring back because it is fascinating to see what I wrote only what?  Not quite sixteen months ago (see below).  Today they are:

Legacy ATSF 4199 Berkshire

Legacy Southern Crescent (repainted black, labeled Union Pacific)

Lionel conventional Atlantic (the same one listed 16 months ago - sweet loco!)

Lionel Santa Fe Anniversary Passenger set A-B-B-A

Legacy ATSF Northern 3751/3759 (have two now)

Quite a change for 16 months ago!

My runners, that stay on the layout are:

  • Lionmaster Big Boy - my favorite - I've worn mine out so that it gives problems now, hoping for a new offering soon - I'll buy two this time.
  • Vision Hudson - I don't like Hudsons that much, but this is just the best runner I have, and a perfect size for my layout
  • Williams Baldwin ten-wheeler (modifed body, using a smaller tender from a Lionel Mogul) - a good slow runner that looks good on my tighter (all 36" curve loops.
  • Lionel conventional Atlantic (2011 version) - just a really nice little locomotive in every way.
  • Legacy 3759 Northern - as good a loco as the Vision Hudson, except for the swinging bell.  Still, I love the sound and the look of it - great runner, too.

My steam roster is unchanged since this was originally posted.  I have two command engines: My Legacy PM 1225 and my MTH Santa Fe Northern.  The 1225 gets the most work.  It mostly pulls my Polar Express passenger consist but sometimes there are photo ops where a freight train is put together.  This is more likely now that the railroad has been able to obtain a PM caboose from Michigan and Great Lakes RR.

Sadly, the SF is not yet certified to run on the RR.  The only engineer says he is having too much fun with the PM to get familiar with the SF.

There are various other conventional engines in storage and they only rarely see the rails.

Hard to pick a favorite from my post last March.  Probably the best running engine is the Lionel S-3 #265.  For freight operation it's my "go to" engine because it runs and sounds so nice and it was completely weathered and really looks the part of a steam engine in service.  But I also like my Weaver S-3 #261.  I've kept this engine looking as it did when it came out of the box because I use it to pull my "excursion train" with 21" K-Line passenger cars, looking like the real excursion train running out of Minneapolis.

But, for sheer beauty, nothing can beat the gorgeous Milwaukee Road A-1 Atlantics!  My representation is from Weaver and pulls seven of Weaver's 21" smooth-sided 1935 era passenger cars.  I'm in the process of upgrading the interiors to more correct representations of the original plus adding details to the underside of the cars. Will become "the worlds most beautiful train" when it's completed, at least according to my opinion.

But meantime, watching a little 2-8-0 "teakettle" pulling a patrol freight of six or seven cars brings back nice memories for me.  This is what I use my Weaver die-cast Consolidation or my K-Line Mikado, for.

And, Don:  I have some C&NW trains because I inadvertently grew up in Milwaukee where both railroads had a strong presence.   They had their own charm.

Paul Fischer

One engine I really love for it's versatility is my Lionel Legacy Great Northern Mikado. Runs great, looks great, and it's a perfect size because it looks good with both scale cars and traditional-size Lionel cars (I still have a nice fleet of those from the MPC days and later). It's just about the perfect all-around steam engine for all types of use.
