where can I find an easy explanation for track signal lighting? I like lots of lights on a layout. what is a recommended spacing of the signals, every 2 ft? more, less?

Generally, spacing would be determined by when you are moving from one block to another on a main or when coming to a junction. Every 2 feet is way too close.
I would tend to agree, placed where the use makes sense is the rule more than anything.
But go nuts if it suites you. Old signals sometimes got left to rot in place as lines shifted too.
Driving, I've seen traffic lights seemingly in the middle of nowhere too

I would suggest Terry Christopher's Custom Signals web page. He has published
a wealth of infomation on setting up a signaling system.
Signals are usually found at the beginning of a block and anywhere there is a diversion [ switch]. As stated above, Review Terry Christopher's " Custom Signal's"web page before it comes down as he is trying to sell off his signal business.

Depends on what you want to know. If you want to know how prototype signaling is set up to guide you on your model, Bruce Chubb has been running a comprehensive treatise on the subject in (Dare I say) Railroad Model Craftsman magazine. It's very detailed and quite informative. I'm thinking about this for my layout and am working with Terry Christopher at Custom Signals to design something that meets my needs and is affordable for my budget.
