im looking for a good transformer to use on my layout but torn between two the lionel zw or the mrc ah601 pure power dual. i mainly run prewar and post so i don't know. please help me out

They are very similar, but the MRC is new and will have a warranty.
To add to the mix, why not go "original" and consider a serviceable Z transformer? I have, use, and serviced a number of Z and ZW transformers. They are very well designed and will outlast your generation if not abused.

ditto on the ZW ... serviceable... straight forward... 60+ years old and still going.... great history and track record. use outboard fuses, however with any digital stuff.
