It is a Lionel engine. He has MTH power. He needs TMCC or Legacy to get it to talk.

He does not need TMCC or Legacy if he wants to run in Conventional Mode.

The horn, bell and engine should still be present when operating in either direction. You can activate the Crewtalk by tapping the horn button when in neutral.

Have Fun!

The manual is here. I see no mention of this way of activating Crewtalk/Towercom.
It is only AUX1+2 or AUX1+7. Might be a hidden feature, but I have never experienced it.

All, the manuals for most if not all modern Lionel equipment is available from their website. Straight from the manual comes this information:

@Ron045 is correct that many locomotives will sound appropriate crew talk with two very quick taps of the horn control (Does not need to be in neutral to do so in my limited experience). However, this particular manual does not call that functionality out, so I wouldn't count on it being present in this instance.

Have to think Überstationmeister and PaperTRW are corect here, especially since Todd was actually working for Lionel when this vintage of engine came out!

I don't see anything in the manual page that is copied above claiming the crewtalk and towercomm will work in conventional? Perhaps the announcements during shut-down sequence, but not triggered at will like you can with a remote.

The ability to do crewtalk or towercomm in conventional came much later than when this engine came out (2000 catalog per Lionel site) I believe.

Thanks, Dave. You're right -- I know this piece well.

As an FYI, CrewTalk in conventional mode wasn't generally available until RailSounds 5. But to be really exact, it was started in conventional RailSounds 4, a non-TMCC version of RailSounds that was used primarily in train sets. This GP-7 uses the standard RS4.
