Williams passenger cars- has anyone tried to remove the lettering without removing the original paint? I am looking at a set. I like the color, but would like to change the road name to a local road that ran a passenger consist up till 1928, but ran it under a leased name. I want to letter these for our local defunct. If I can avoid a repaint, that would be a real time saver.

Or will I get lucky- and the car color is the actual plastic & not painted?

I repaint a lot of WbB locos and a few cars. The tampo print varies greatly depending on when and where it was manufactured. Some older Williams tampo comes off easy with a very very fine sanding stick never disrupting the paint below. Some of the more recent China manufacture items that have tampo that is very tough to remove.

Every Williams and WbB item I have are painted.....never had a bare plastic item other than the VERY EARLY box car with the doors molded open all plastic car.

Dave- I was hoping you'd chime in- you're kind of the resident expert here... I sent you an email with some other questions. If I have to repaint, I have your posts to fall back on, and well- this isn't my first rodeo either. The New Haven colors would work for what I am doing, but if I am repainting, I might as well change it up.

I tried to remove the tampo printing from a set of Williams Nickel-Plate Road Passenger Cars to add Custom Coca Cola Passenger cars to my wife's K-Line Coca Cola Passenger Set. They would not come off without digging the plastic shell.

What I wound up doing was to do a repaint I Tried the Sanding off the letters on the Observation as this car was already present in the K-Line Set.  So I did a light sanding to rough up the exterior and sprayed it with a Rattle Can as that was the only way I could get the Correct Color red to match the other Cars.

Here is the Result.  I used Photoshop to create the Decals and then printed them on my laser Printer using Bel Decal paper.
