Assuming they have not been modified, they do not have sound, only a horn. In my experience, they "burp" if the DC voltage offset is not strong enough/long enough. Running them with a postwar transformer seems to create this problem more than modern transformers, but it is possible with them as well. In the postwar transformers, I think it is related to the copper rectifier disc not working properly or not having enough current passing through it. Certain waveforms from modern transformers also create an issue. Which transformer are you using?
Internally, I think the potentiometers on the circuit board change the tone and pitch of the horn.
