If this is the Lionel post war #60 trolley, I think it is a little different than gunrunnerjohn described.  I think the 60 trolley is one of the few Lionel items with the field coil wound in both directions.  Is so, the field has three leads.  Two of the field leads were connected to the switch the bumper changed when getting hit.  This switch connected  one or the other field coils to ground in series with the armature depended which way the car was to run.

Correct, if it has three leads, it's a split field and the field is used to determine direction.  The unused field is left open.

 

If it only has a total of two leads and is not center-tapped, see my previous instructions.  Make sure there's not a center tap that is connected to frame ground.  If both leads are free, measure from either to frame ground, you shouldn't have any connection.
