I have read past posts on this subject and all seem to confirm that the scale MTH crossing gate can be wired to the 153IR using the exact connections that are shown on the instructions for both units - gate red to 153IR ac power, gate black to 153IR ac ground, gate NO to 153IR NO, gate NC to 153IR NC, and no connection needed for the gate blue wire. I ran wires from the 153IR to a small Lionel transformer and have the 153IR set to auxiliary. I hooked up the first gate this way, put my hand in front of the sensor and the gate went down normally but stayed down? I disconnected it and tried again and now nothing happens. I hooked up a second gate to a second 153IR the same way. It went down (with only one light flashing) and came back up normally several times but then stayed down with the one light that was working now on continuously?

I am concerned that I have somehow damaged the gates and/or the 153IR's. Could the gates be defective (just purchased brand new)or is there some other wiring option that is needed?

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have either device but one troubleshooting approach would be to test each device separately.

 

For example you can test the gate by itself:

gate red ac power, gate black to ac ground

then touch the gate NC to ac ground to simulate the inactive condition (gate up)

then touch the gate NO to ac ground to simulate the active condition (gate down)

 

If this doesn't work then pairing it with the 153IR won't either.

 

I'm fairly sure the 153IR has an electromechanical relay inside.  So when it turns on/off you should hear a faint relay click.  So with just ac power and ac ground hooked up to the 153IR it should "click" when you wave your hand and then un-click after the knob-settable seconds of time-delay.  Again, I don't have one and am speculating that you can hear this click in a quiet room.  Or if you have a meter you can electrical test the continuity of the NO and NC contacts.  Again this is simply trying to isolate the problem.

 

I suppose another possibility is the transformer you're using has issues so that too could be something to look at or measure if you have a meter.
