I have one last odd shaped area on my layout I’ve been thinking for a while on what to put there. I’ve seen pictures of restored cabooses used for museum displays or a unique vacation stay. I enjoy building laser kits and would like to build a couple to use as a cool scene, similar to the Whistle Stop diner, which I may also build.
There seems to be many kits in HO scale but not in O. Would anyone know where I could find a good quality laser kit manufacturer for cabooses?
I wouldn’t use any trucks or couplers, and make my own foundation base similar again, to the Whistle Stop design.
If I had to, I could always get a couple unlettered cabooses and remove the trucks and couplers, but I prefer to built.

Thanks, Gene

The only laser kits I know of were the ones from Mullet River. Highly detailed and expensive if you find one.

If you search the auction site you will see some older kits show up. Not laser cut but for a non operating car they would probably work.

For wood siding I prefer the real thing. You can check out All Nation. They have a few kits minus trucks and couplers that are 3D printed plastic. Without actually seeing them I can’t tell you how detailed the wood grain is. But I would assume they fit together well.

Quality Craft and Ambroid made a bunch of wooden caboose kits.   As mentioned not laser cut, just old fashioned wood assembly.     I think one or the other actually manufactured the kits, for both brands probably Quality Craft (which was Bob Weaver's company before Weaver).   The construction is pretty much identical for both lines.

I addition to the C&O mentioned above, QC also did a PRR N6A and N6B.    Ambroid did a PRR ND.    One or the other did a Santa Fe caboose, and one, I think QC did a B&O caboose.    I've also seen a D&H version that I think was Ambroid.

I think Labelle did a "Drovers" caboose which might be great for a diner.

I have built QC and Ambroid kits and a couple of Labelle freight cars.    They all have all the wood you need and the QC and AMbroid have the end of the sticks color color coded to identify sizes.    the QC and Ambroid have diecast windows included among other details.   I don't think Labelle kits have as many diecast details.

The QC and Ambroid show up at O scale shows often in the 20-25 dollar range.   Labelle is still in business and you can get whatever they have new.

Also, Labelle has a bunchof wooden passenger car and streetcar/interurban kits which would make even better diners.

On the Bay now are several caboose kits from Train-Craft (Bob Peare) that often show up in the "March Meet", and other O scale shows, very and more, reasonably.  Many designs were made, including side door caboose and work train cars.  I could picture a work train bunkcar in a "Strasburg-like" "Caboose Motel" setting, and whatever other caboose varieties are appealing.

Hey Gene. I enjoy model wooden ships and a maker of them has a wooden wagon where the brakeman would sit. Not exactly a caboose but figured I'd provide the link anyway.  Unsure of the size but customer views show it on 2-rail.

Thank you Matt for taking the time and sharing the link to the wagon. It’s not quite what I’m looking for but I appreciate your thought. I’ve been looking at various pictures of restored cabooses for public display. This is the theme(scene) I’m going for on my layout. My plan is to either buy a MTH woodside caboose similar to the one I have already or build a kit. If it’s a MTH, I’ll remove the trucks and couplers and scratch build a base for it to sit on.
