Hello All,

My new WTIU has presented two problems.  Has anyone had or successfully solved the problems discussed below.  Unfortunately, the users guide does not provide an MTH help desk phone number or any other obvious way to contact MTH technical representatives.

Background

I have been using 1 MTH Z4000 (first version and, currently, most recent version), 1 TIU (Rev. H2) , 1 WIU, 5 AIUs (in a daisy chain), 3 DCS handhelds, and 1 TMCC Base 1L.  All of my firmware and apps are up-to-date.  This combination of devices has been successfully operating DCS locomotives, TMCC locomotives and accessories, and conventionally powered locomotives and accessories.  The DCS app for Android is installed on a Samsung Galaxy 23+.

Problem #1 and questions

Problem:  I am trying to determine whether my WTIU is defective or poorly designed.  My WTIU cannot operate more than 1 AIU.  The DCS app lists all 5 AIUs.  The accessories and switches listed on the correct AIUs and ports.  In other words, nothing is greyed out.  I systematically tested all components.  After I reinstalled my TIU and WIU, the AIUs began working correctly again.  See posting in this forum for details.

Questions:  Has anyone else had this problem?  If so, were you able to solve it?

Problem #2 and questions

Problem:  The WTIU cannot connect with my TMCC Base 1L.  Inexplicably, MTH does not provide a cable to connect a Base 1L and Base 3 directly to the WTIU.  A forum member recommended purchasing a specific cable to connect the male serial plug of the MTH 50-1032 cable to the USB port on the WTIU.  The recommended cable, however, has a male serial plug, too; consequently, I inserted a gender changer connecter between the plugs; however, the WTIU still cannot connect to the Base 1L.  All of my TMCC engines appear in the DCS app, i.e., they are not greyed out. See posting in this forum for details.

Questions:  Has anyone been able to connect a WTIU to a Base 1L or Base 3?  If so, how?  What cable did you use to connect the 50-1032 cable to the WTIU?

General comments

This has been a frustrating experience.

The quick and users guides provide incomplete instructions.  For example, they make no mention of the transformer packed with the WTIU.  Using the transformer makes the fixed power port input/output connections unnecessary.  The instructions do not explain how to use AIUs.

The instructions should instruct users to download The DCS Wi-Fi Companion 2nd edition from MTH. The Companion explains in detail how to use the MTH Wi-Fi and app functions.  The WTIU instructions do not provide detailed information about obtaining help from MTH technicians.

1. and 2.  No, not had the chance to try those yet.

Other comments: I've found that after changing states (power, connections, etc), the app does not find the change the first attempt to access the new addition.  Hit the refresh button in the upper left again (circular arrow).  Switch screens and come back and hit it again if that doesn't work.  I am coalescing on thinking we'll all get very familiar with that button.

Secondly, that little wall wart that came with the WTIU is mandatory, but not exclusive.  You need it to power the WTIU and that's all it does.  You need another power source into the WTIU inputs (usually, but no longer has to be, Fixed 1) to power the related output.

I'll be able to relate my experience with your problem #2 in about a week when I can test things out myself

Thank you for the information.

I spent many hours bashing my head against a brick wall trying to determine why my WTIU would not operate my AIUs.  In my view, MTH should have beta tested the WTIU on a large layout, e.g. YouTubers' layouts, and made the cables available before offering the unit for sale.   Furthermore, rather than stating the cables will be available at a "later" date, MTH should announce a specific or at least approximate date.  Also, MTH should post information about the promised cables and the WTIU/AIU software problem on its web site and in the daily e-mail product announcement e-mails.  I think that MTH needs to improve its customer service.

I think that both MTH and Lionel need to consider shipping a product after it's actually finished.

And I would add, not to discontinue production of a critical operational product until the new replacement product is finished and ready to ship.

Well, covid didn't provide many options for any company large or small to continue regular production of "critical operational products". Needless to say, many other industries received preferential treatment as their "critical operational product" was far more important than toy electric trains.

I think that MTH needs to improve its customer service.

Or what?

Presently there are no significant consequences to them not doing so.

MTH decided to go cheap in developing the software, as most manufacturers do nowadays, relying on their customers to be patient as bugs are found in the field and fixes for them are released over time, and relying on those same customers to be their development testing team.

You would probably say in response that they will surely pay the price for being so short-sighted and overly thrifty, but there will be no significant consequences.  Just as with most smartphone apps, at least one brand of modern automobiles, and the stuff employed in other hobbies, today's customers have learned overwhelmingly to accept these shortcomings within their modern software.

It's a given.
