I want to add a consist storage area starting out with one strait lead off my lower main line transitioning into four 150 inch storage tracks. I want them to be parallel and as close to each other as possible. I want 0-72 curves. I use Fastrak. Can any of you experts post a track plan for me? I am tired of building a consist every time I run trains. It would be nice to just couple up and pull. Thanks Nick

Since I don't know anything about tubular track, here's an added version using 5165/5166 switches with 5572 curves so you can gauge the difference. If that's not the right track , let me know.

Thanks Dave !!
Any time, Bob.
Looks good thank you..Nick

And once again the FT "bug" in SCARM bites me. Take a look at the new configuration with regards to the switches, they need that silly extra filler piece where half the roadbed is cut off. RR-Track doesn't let us connect pieces to the switch without it, but SCARM does. Sorry, I should have checked.

No problem Building the bench work now I will post some pics of progress. Nick
Mr.DOUBLEDAZ Can you tell me how wide the four tracks will be? I am building benchwork and I need to know how wide to make it. I was thinking 24 inches will be enough? Thanks for your help Nick
Nick, if I have the dimensions of FasTrack correct, the tracks themselves are 4" wide (black rectangles). So, the 4 tracks that make up the yard will measure 22" from the outside edges of the track roadbed (gray rectangle). They will measure 25.5" from the edge of the mainline track (green rectangle). Top edge to bottom edge of all 5 tracks will measure 29.5". HTH

Any time Nick, always glad to help.
Just for the record, my Fastrack is 3 5/16".

Thanks. The only reference I would find was in a thread here that said 4", so that's what I used.
You're welcome, Dave. I thought you would like to know.
I will be building it out an extra 12 inches or more in width. Knowing myself I will wind up adding a 5th-6-7-8 etc etc LOL I have lost my mind. Nick
No, that's just good planning!

Nick - I agree about it being nice to be able to pull trains out of a yard w/o having to move them by hand. FWIW, I started out with the attached SCARM plan and ended up with the yard built as shown, with 8 sidings. Of course, mine are shorter and the curves are O-36, but it gives you an idea of what it might look like. I also used a couple of O-72 Wyes as well as O-72 switches.
One thing you might want to consider is leaving some open space between the tracks for long, narrow accessories like coal ramps, saw mill, log loaders, etc.
I also added lighted bumpers at each end and put each track on a separate toggle switch.

RICHIE Your yard looks very functional. I have a yard existing with 8 tracks but they only hold about 5 or 6 cars each. It functions well but when I have people over it is just to time consuming to operate and carry a conversation at the same time. I will be posting pics of my progress. Thanks for the input guys. Nick
Update- First I tweaked the track plan. I eliminated the first curve out of the yard lead turnout. It is going to be to "treacherous" to back a 13 car consist into the lower line with multiple s curves and I have the room to build it out at an angle. I installed the yard lead turnout which turned out to be a huge project (naturally) had to do some custom cutting. Thanks for looking.Pressing on. Nick

Hey Nick, looks good so far. Question on your benchwork, I too have an already-carpeted-trainroom, do your benchwork legs rest on top of the carpet or did you cut holes to get the legs to rest on solid floor ? I was just wondering about layout stability if it's built upon cushy carpeting ?? Thks, Rich.
Ahhh....MY kind of "planning" "RH" crossed out and replaced with "LH", cat-scratched dimensions with unreadable numbers....oh yeah. I think we're both doing great with this model railroad thing!
Don
Wyes also get you more even length on the yard tracks; then you don't have to worry about which train goes on which track!

Double.... I only bought one RH switch because thats all my LHS had. I only see one Y- one RH and one LH is that correct? OR is it three Y's? My LHS had a bunch of 0-72 Y's and they were 25 bucks cheaper lol. Please let me know I like your revised version better. Thanks again Nick

King...My carpet is padded so I add 1/8 inch and it has worked out perfect. However it will depend on your padding. Nick
DON Yes If I were not changing my plan every 15 minutes I wouldn't be Nick lol.

Chuck yes and..I will lose the double S curve on the bottom track! Thanks, Nick
Rockstsrs1989, that's a good design but I would not build mine that way. Sorry, I don't have a way to display a pic but I will try to explain. I would come off the top main line with that right hand switch you have. Then I would run 3 or 4 left hand switches (if space is available) right off that main line switch giving you 3 or 4 parallel tracks. The advantage with this design is that on the 1st 2 tracks you could get a little bit more length out of them.

It's 3 O-72 wye switches and here are several alternative configurations.

Dave, here is your design under construction. This is a mock up. each track will have a capacity of about 13 cars. It is going to work perfect. Back to you Dave! Nick

That looks really nice Nick. Thanks for sharing the photos.
Update: Just have to wire up the turnouts, install a small control panel and do some ballasting. I love the Y's no treacherous S turns pushing trains into the yard.I left room for expansion but if I were smart I should do it now or I will have to tear up track and ballast to get it in We'll see lol.Nick

Nice.looks like it meets your needs just fine.
Finished up the new storage tracks. Here is a quick video. Nick
