Installed my first of many YLBs that I purchased from the hands of @gunrunnerjohn at Henning's booth at York!

The first patient was a Lionel 6-18351 NYC S-1 Electric Locomotive.

Pretty darn simple:

  1.  Remove 4 screws to liberate the cab
  2. Plug the YLB to the battery socket
  3. Strip and connect the red wire to the gaggle of center rail wires' twist nut
  4. Replace the shell and 4 screws
  5. Enjoy the improved operation!

Extremely satisfied with the product!

This evening, following the success of the S-1, I dd the Lionel 6-11208 UP Legacy Lionmaster 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4011. Pretty much the same story:

  1. Remove 4 screws to liberate the tender shell
  2. Plug the YLB to the battery socket
  3. Remove the heatshrink sheath from the gaggle of center rail wires
  4. Strip and connect the red wire to the gaggle of center rail wires using a new twist nut
  5. Replace the shell and 4 screws
  6. Enjoy the improved operation!

Only issue I experienced here is the YLB doesn't supply power long enough to allow the shutdown sequence to complete, but this may be due to user error by putting the YLB through its paces and not allowing enough "charge time".

One lase one for tonight - the 6-28227 - Union Pacific TMCC SD70MAC #4979. This was the most difficult one thus far.

  1. Remove 6 screws to liberate the shell
  2. Plug the YLB to the battery socket
  3. Attempt to trace the center pickup rollers
  4. Rip more hair out tracing for the center pickup wires...
  5. Go blad tracing out the center pickup roller wires...
  6. Cut the located pickup roller wire
  7. Strip and connect the YLB red wire to both ends of the cut center rail wire
  8. Apply solder and new heatshrink sheath.
  9. Replace the shell and 6 screws
  10. Enjoy the improved operation!

Unfortunately, running this locomotive does a great job at finding any fault in my O-31 tubular track...

Dependent on the volume and the length of the shutdown sounds, that may happen.  The primary purpose of the YLB is to maintain the sound over power interruptions to the locomotive and for conventional running during direction changes.

I NEVER put a battery in my Lionel Legacy engines. I run them command only, Never had any problem, need to put in battery.

If you had the new Vision Line Challenger or Niagara, you might think differently.  The closely spaced pickup rollers cause the sound to drop out on many switches in command mode.  For conventional running, the benefits are obvious.
