What causes the Z4000 to short out at 15 volts with no load? I guess I have to get it to there
repair shop. Any advice? It is just on channel 1.

Is this with no wires connected to the output terminals?
If yes, there is a problem with the transformer.
If no, disconnect everything and test.
As he said. This is just the Z4000 shorting on one handle or thru a TIU wired to a layout?
It is the left handle only. No wire connected to it at all. Bring it up and the red light flashes.
It appears like the pot for that handle is bad. It must be to sent to MTH or someone authorized to replace that part as MTH will not sell the part to the end user.
One more question, have you unplugged it and then plugged it in again? That may help reset a breaker.
Sounds like a board failure. What is the serial #? Early units had different parts? G
I have a early Z4K and it had a similar problem. I called MTH got a RA number and got it back about a month later. The repair charge was reasonable. Don't quote me but about $80.00 including return shipping plus what it cost to FedEx it there so around the $100.00 mark but that was back in 2011.
when you first power it up do you keep both throttles closed? if you don't have them both closed completely the red light will come up for a short and you have to power down again and make sure both throttles are completely closed!
