I am a bit surprised that the ventilation system can still handle the smoke and steam.

That's becasue it's the circular and wide[from english standards] Metropolitain line which was built for that purpose. You must be thinking of the other "regular tube" lines that intersect under centre city london.


No worries, the Metropolitain line doesn't go through the likes of Picadilly Circus. just "Mind the GAP!"

It's interesting to note that the first underground railways in London were built with clearances for smoke ventilation and 7-foot broad gauge trains operating on dual-gauge tracks.

The later "Tube" lines were engineered for expedient machine-boring of tunnels in deep clay strata, and of course have always used electric traction.
