Lionel Standard Gauge Cruise Control

I would think an ERR unit might work. If the motors had flywheels you could go with a PS-2 conversion kit.

There are no flywheels on the motors.

I already have one.

Is its motors geared directly to the drivers ? I cannot picture it. I would have thought that it would have used a flywheel setup like the proto - 2 drive . If its like Lionel's O gauge set ups can you use parts from them and retrofit yours ?

I believe the motors are directly geared to the drivers. I contacted ERR and they said their Cruise Commander Mod kit would work.

Instead of Cruise control you could wire the motors in series to give better slow speed control.

What Jim suggested might work good; I've done it with Williams engines and they run better than out of the box.

I wanted one for a while and an oppurtunity presented itself so I jumped on it. It's one big train. The engine weighs about 20 pounds and the whole set is about 11'-8" long.

That standard gauge Hiawatha set has got to be the ultimate in new production standard gauge and it looks super on your layout. Do yo have any pictures of the interior of the passenger cars ?

Now that you have the Hiawatha set do you think that will give you the itch to get the Commodore Vanderbilt set also.

Oh Great!!!! I waited a few years to get the Hiawatha. I finally get it and right away you put the Commodore in my head now. Just great!

I'm really impressed with the quality of this set. It is so much nicer than the MTH standard gauge sets. Fit and finish are great. Inside the engine the electronics are neatly put together. Plus each car is different, even the roofs, which means separate tooling was required for each car. All the doors are spring loaded, unlike the MTH models that flap open.

I also like the fact that they made the cars with four wheel trucks instead of six. This means less rolling friction. The cars also track better. I was able to back this set up thru 042 curves, all 11'-8" of it with no problem. I can't do that with my MTH state set.

I wish Lionel was able to keep this line going.

Here are some poor quality pictures of the cars. The only negative comment I have is that I don't like that they used plastic tables and seats in the cars.

I have this set and the Commodore VB. These are by far the nicest standard gauge trains I have and I find myself running these two trains more than any others! I really wish that Lionel would continue this line, even if it was only 1 or 2 trains per year.

Their Cruise Commander Modular Version allows you to add cruise control to an engine that does not have flywheels.

Just a question but does the electric rr cruise work well was thinking about installing one in my Mth Stephen Girard 9e don't know if a ac/dc tmcc or cruise kit with rail sounds will work and have any good reviews Nice set Joe I always thought about getting that set or the Vanderbilt set now have to put it on my bucket list

That set is fantastic !  Good luck with it.  Will the cruise control mod fit in the loco shell ?  That will make running it soo much more fun as well.

Yes, it will fit in the engine shell. Plenty of room in that monster.

Joe, if you run it with Legacy control will it give more speed steps?

I don't know. I do know if you add the ERR Cruise Commander you have your choice of 32 or 100 speed steps.

 

The Cruise Commander came in the other day. Hopefully I will get it installed this weekend.
