In Cressona PA, a low stone arch bridge that the READING RR passes over, was a problem no matter what they tried. Finally a smart person came up with the idea of hanging sections of large PVC pipes from chains, which looks like monster wind chimes, on structures several yards ahead of the bridge. Just seeing this odd structure grabs your attention cause it's so different then anything the mind is use to seeing. If the trucker doesn't hear his truck hit them, he can check to see if their swinging in his mirrors after driving through them. It's been working great.

We have our own version of "11ft 8 in" bridge, over by Monrovia, Md....but it is essentially an Arch stone "bridge" built by the Irish masons for the 1st B&O RR.

Despite more and more warnings and warning gadgets installed, even for an 1/8 of a mile  BEFORE the Arch stone bridge, we still get trucks stuck under that tunnel/arch.  A camera would be quite useful!!!!🚫🚫🚫🚫

I'm retired from PENNDOT, when I started working for the state, I was on the bridge crew. We called the height restricted I-beam, "headache bars".  The posted height is usually a few inches lower then the actual height of the bridge or headache bar. Many times the road under the underpass can not be dug out to allow for more clearance because of drainage.

We put a headache bar to restrict large trucks from going  across an old thru truss bridge, I did the welding on the bar. A few days after traffic was allowed to cross the bridge, my foreman told us we had to go fix the headache bar, a truck hit it. I said to my supervisor, I have one question, did any of my welds break ? He said nope.

 Edited for spelling, ;-)
