I picked this up today at the Greenberg show in Va. Beach:

Does anyone know if there's 1/43 trailers available that would look good with this, or would a Weaver 1/48 trailer work?

From what the vendor said these did not come with anything but the truck, no trailers.

I want to buy or make a trailer that would be good for hauling refrigerated items, beer, meat, etc for my cold storage facility on my layout.

There are some ETRL trailers that you could put with this unit , you could always paint them in same livery    other that that I had bought some trailers from Valley   something or another , the box is sitting sitting on my train table at my son's home some two hours from mine sorry I cannot remember name   but they were 1/43

I will see if I have a couple of photos  ,,,, usually I am at my son's on weekend  but we had a big snow storm here so I did not  go   other wise I would be  writing my head off with replies  ....   If I can find some photos I will post  tomorrow to you

I looked at WalMart, but didn't find much of anything.

I searched the internet and found something that I would like to have instead of a full semi-trailer:

Measurements tell me the "box" must have been around 12 feet long, 8 feet high, and 9 feet wide.

Any ideas what the rear doors would look like?  I can probably make this or something similar to it out of styrene.  I doubt I can find a box like this that is separate from the truck.

Maybe not interchangeable, but the length would definitely fit my layout better.

Bob,

Berkshire Valley has a great selection that work well with the Ertl semi's:

BV also made a cargo box that also fits on the Ertl trucks that shows up from time to time on ebay. Lastly, Ertl also made several cargo box trucks based on their 1950 Chevy COE truck. Most were REA versions, but you could remove the box from it and fit it to the International. They also show up on ebay fairly frequently.

Good luck in your search!

Thanks guys!  Don, I never thought of doing LED headlights, but now that's on the list too.

I ran across this photo:

It got me thinking that maybe I could build my own.

Here's what I have done:

I made it using some sheet styrene siding.

It's on temporarily until I find something with better detail.

The yellow wheels are just TOO much, any suggestions on making them look, uh, not so new?

Thanks guys!  Those Berkshire Valley trailers look nice.

John,

Thanks for the weathering tip!  Anything will help if it'll tone down that yellow jaundice on the wheels

My son used to work for a couple of local cold storage companies so I decided to model a small one on my layout.  This truck and maybe a couple of those trailers will be right at home.

White or grey will work on the wheels.

Nice work on the box. Don't forget mudflaps for the back wheels and at least one red lamp of some kind on the rear.

Weathered black will do for the tires. Take the shine off. A tiny detail is to take a bit of fresh flat black and do a stroke on a tire like the driver cut too close to a curb on the right rear tire.

If you put latches on the rear doors, don't forget to do a little bit of LIGHT RUST and SILVER, where the latches would swing back and forth to open, shut the doors. Also if it is a reefer, light rust under the corners for the drain holes.

Toss a HO Scale Boxcar air tank or something on the driver's side behind the cab frame (But in front of the rear wheel.)

And so on.. you are already off to a good start.

Actually these Ertl tractors came originally without trailers.   There were 4 different ones as far as I know.   The International as above,   An early 60s chevy as shown also in this thread, a 1953 (I think GMC cab-over) and 1949 or so Diamond T.

I think many of the ones made into banks were done as advertising or for gifts by various companies.   I have stumbled onto a few of those for Conoco, but with the 1934 Ford tractor.

Ertl did make some undecorated plain white trailers.

I have not seen too many of these as tractor-trailer sets.
