Tried my new Base 3 with a Cab 1 remote that I bought and it worked well running four different locomotives.

Then I figured I would try the Cab3 app (which I have been using in BlueTooth mode previously).

I uninstalled it and installed the latest version from the Play Store.  Then I made sure the Base 3 was in AP mode and turned it on.  I was able to connect my Samsung tablet to the Lionel network.

Opened the Cab 3 app and clicked on the Base 3 tab.  Here is what I got:

20241218_23103120241218_23201520241218_23212620241218_232134

Then it said it failed to connect to the Base 3 and then crashed.  Tried it multiple times and had the same result.  It even issued a crash report.

Any ideas?

My tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Tab A  (SM-T350).  It doesn't do software updates anymore.  Says the latest version is T350XXU1CQJ5/T350XAR1CQJ5?  Android version is 7.1.1

The tablet is not connected to a track.  It is by itself on a desk plugged into an outlet.

And my new MTH WTIU runs perfectly fine on this tablet.

Thanks,

John

Walmart has a 7" ONN tablet for $39. Works perfectly with all of the train control apps.

I'll go there today and take a look.  My Samsung tablet is 8" and my phone is 6" so that will be in between in size.  Price is really reasonable.

UPDATE:  Looked online.  Not in stock at store.  Tried to order it.  "Currently unavailable"

Thanks,

John

I looked at refurbished iPad mini's some are as old as my tablet and there are a lot of negative Amazon reviews about them not lasting.

What I really want is a Cab 2 remote instead of all this.  The Cab 1 is OK except that it has no screen.  Maybe the phone is good enough for now tiny as it is.  I updated the Cab 3 firmware.  What a nightmare (turn off the Access Point, but you need an internet connection ????)  Managed to do it eventually with my phone, but not straight forward as described.  Not even 100% sure how I did it.

I checked online and yes these are now only available if your local store has them in stock!

I started with a Samsung Galaxy 9+ which worked absolutely fine... but, I quickly ordered the Amazon Fire 7 (fits in your hand like a remote) for 59 bucks and it's been awesome.

Thanks Dennis.

If the 7" ONN looks too small when I go to pick it up, The Amazon Fire HDPlus,  8" tablet is only $59.99 (but some reviews say the Fire Tablets aren't compatible with the Google Play Store).

Here's the ticket... Fire Toolbox V36.0. Got rid of all the spyware, advertisements ...play store works like a charm and the battery will 'actually' last 10 hours now.

Picked up the 7" ONN today from the Fishkill, NY Walmart.

Size isn't bad at all.  Just slightly smaller than my 8"" Samsung tablet.

The Legacy Cab 3/Base 3 app and hardware seems to run and respond very well on this device.  H1000 was right about that.  Pretty good for $39.

What doesn't work properly is the MTH Wi-Fi DCS app with the WTIU.  It works perfectly with the old Samsung, but not with this new ONN.

When you program an engine into it you can get one command out of it before it stops responding.   Example: Blow the horn and that's the last thing it will respond to.  You have to remove power to shut it off and try again.  Then the same thing happens.  Start it moving forward and it will keep going and not accept any further commands.

Anyone who owns one of these have any ideas?  Latest firmware for the WTIU and latest version of the app from the Play Store.

Thanks,

John
