A friend asked me to research his childhood set which appears to be in great condition and has the OBs.

It contains 681 turbine with 2671W tender, 3464/63132 ATSF boxcar, 6472 refrigerator, and 6457 caboose..

It sounds like set 2167WS but that apparently has a 6462 gondola car instead of the 6472.

Can anyone help clarify what this is?

Thank you!

Looked through the Standard Catalog of Train sets, and the only one that comes close is 2167WS, as you stated.  Apparently the 6462 Gondola got swapped out, with a 6472 replacement, but everything else is correct for that set.  Dealers would often replace items, to make a set more sellable.  A classic case is the 6262 red frame with a black frame version.  Sets with the red 6262 were often replaced with the black, and now the red frame is highly collectible and demands higher prices.

Never heard that. Where did the red frame ones go? If they were swapped out of sets, they would have been sold separately, and still turn up.

I don't know about swapping red 6262s for black in sets affecting the premium price that the red version has, but if I recall correctly the red version had a very small production run in 1956 only anyway, so that in itself would make it harder to find.

Thanks John, I am aware of the scarcity of the red 6262 flatcars, I was referring to their desirability being caused by dealers swapping them out of sets.
