I have a Lionel 6-17606 NYC Pacemaker Standard 0 smoking caboose with flashing rear light from 1990. I tried running at command voltage, but smelled bad plastic smoke. The smoke unit still work, but I need a way of reducing voltage to the unit so it does not overheat. The heating element measures 2 ohms now. Will a diode of ? volts ? amps work. Would the flashing rear light work with the diode installed? I can not take the top off because the plastic is melted to the bottom of the smoke unit. Has any one fixed this caboose to run on 18Volts? Thanks Bruce

I put in a 3 amp 50 volt diod from Radio Shack BUT I think the smoke resister inside the unit is semi shorted out because I get too muck smoke temp at 8-10 volts. Does anyone have a smoke unit for this caboose? I will put on want to buy list also. Thanks Bruce
FWIW, I put an MTH HO fan driven smoke unit in one of these for a guy, I had a power supply to vary the power so you could get as little or as much smoke as you liked. It's a small unit, but it smokes better than any of the standard caboose smoke units.

John, How/where did you manage to get hold of one of those HO smoke units? I haven't been able to locate a supplier.
Send me an email if you want to buy one, I buy them direct from MTH.
