In a past post there was a lot of discussion about opening one's home to visitors to view one's layout. I know that there were a lot of negative reasons why not to do it, but I also knew from experience that there were many more positives to have an Open House. I expressed the desire to do that once again as I had done before in Atlanta during the Piedmont Pilgrimage every fall. So I had my first of what I plan to be an annual open house yesterday. It was a great success. I had invited fellow Lions Club members to see it, but at the request of my sister, I also placed it on Facebook for folks to come and see. I ended up having 65 people stop by and with the pictures that are being shared and the word of mouth, I am betting that that number will double next year.

With the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History being renovated, the Duke Energy train display was not put up this year, so I had much less competition!!!  :-)  As for the open house, I had plenty to eat for visitors. I made two pots of soup... a bean soup with ham and my home made chicken vegetable soup. There was plenty of cookies, candies, and salty snacks too. I made a lime sherbet punch and had coffee to drink. I also made out a list of "Can You Find It" for anyone to have fun looking at the vignettes on the layout. It was so fun seeing the kids and the adults go full bore to complete the list. My layout has a story to it and it definitely caught the interest of those who stopped by. Many more folks who could not make it are asking if they could still stop by during the Holiday.

I am including pictures of the layout that my sister took though she did not get any with the visitors, especially the kids which I was hoping. Some similar pictures I have posted before. I hope to post a video too, Merry Christmas to everyone!

Thank you, Greg and Joe. It truly was fun to see the kids react to the whole concept. Heck, I even had one youngster donate a small Triceratops figurine...I guess it will have to go on the layout somewhere. What is fun for me is to have folks suggest new scenes or items to include on the layout. I am running out of real estate, but I am sure I might fit some ideas in!   Here is a video taken after my noon to four scheduled time as folks came straggling in.

Jim, I humbly thank you. Baseball has been part of my life since I was young. I played on the Ohio University team that made it to the College World Series with teammates Mike Schmidt and Steve Swisher in 1970 (me of the bench warmer type)! I also coached baseball throughout my career in Georgia and now back in my little hometown of Wilmington, Ohio. Those Georgia teams won the state titles a couple of years, so I have the fortune of possessing a couple of rings commemorating those years because of the talent on those teams.

With all of that said, I had to have a Field of Dreams on the layout. I did have some visitors that had been to the Field of Dreams in Dyersville  and they shamed me that I had not been there yet. I need to make my way out there to become a "member" of the club.

Thank you again and wishing you a Very Merry Christmas.

Rick

I retired from playing baseball in 2004 (Men’s Senior Baseball League) at age 42. Before that point, I simply couldn’t get enough baseball in my life and sincerely thought I could build a full-size Field of Dreams in N scale.

But as I moved away from active modeling in N scale and concentrated more on O gauge, I began to wonder how I could capture the field concept in limited space in a larger scale.

Your layout and this scene serve as an inspiration. Thanks!

I envy those of you who played on that field. I was still playing in two fast pitch leagues in my late 40s. I know those days are over with both a hip replacement and a shoulder replacement completed this year...too many thrown balls during endless days of batting practice. I am just glad that I can turn the throttles up on the transformers and can now crawl back under the train table!!!!!!   :-)
