For my first repaint project I would like to convert 3 MTH Southern Limited Madison passenger cars to the Monon Black & Gold paint scheme.  The decals I've obtained are Microscale 48-109 for F3's and I intend on repurposing the gold Monon portions of the decals for the job.  I set up a test bed of clear plastic from a pastry tray from the local grocery store.  The test bed was primed with Duplicolor #1699 Primer / Sealer and then sprayed with Testor's #1247 Gloss Black.  I coated the test bed with Pledge Floor Shine and set one of the decals.  So far I like the look and the decal has laid down pretty well, just waiting for it to completely dry before reapplying the Pledge and then top coating with Testor's #1260 Dullcote.  The problem I'm having is attempting to match the Microscale Gold with a paint for the gold horizontal stripe on the car.  The folks at Microscale attempted to match the Gold to a Pantone color but couldn't seem to find a match.  I tried Testor's #1244 Gloss Metallic Gold over the Dupicolor Gray Primer and also over Tamiya White Primer and to my eye both seem darker than the Microscale Gold.  I'm ordering a can of Tamiya Metallic Gold synthetic lacquer as I can't find it locally available.  If that doesn't work Tamiya makes 3 other golds ... Gold, Champagne Gold and Titanium Gold and I guess I'll have to try those one at a time.

For the masters on the forum ... do you normally pick (or make) your decals and then try to match the paint or pick your paint and try to match the decals?

I guess my thoughts were making gold letters to apply on a black background would not turn out very well using inkjet decal paper (If i could even get close to the color / density).  If anyone has had success matching a Microscale Gold to a paint I would truly appreciate any pointers you could provide.

Thanks,
Barry

You should be able to find a gold that is very close. Tamiya Champagne Gold is very 'blonde' and not what I think of when I think MONON.   Regular gold might work.

Everything else sounds like you are doing well. Just one thing....make sure your paints 'gas out' before any Pledge is applied. It can trap solvents under it then months later spiderweb crack like crazy. I cure my paint in a food dehydrator so I can move along faster.

Good luck.

AMCDAVE,

Thanks for the tip about letting the paint cure first.  Since I don't have a dehydrator I took a tip from one of your old post and let the gloss black cure for 4-5 days then gave it the smell test before applying the Pledge.  I would like to say Thank You to you, OldRob, BRR and the many many others who have posted or replied to post regarding painting, decals and repaints.  I've tried to read (and reread) as many of them as I could locate with the forum search engine and take the advice to heart before dipping my toes in the water (or paint).

Thanks again,

Barry
