One thing I've noticed is a lack of 2 rail shay locomotives.  Even more difficult is 3 truck 2 rail shay locos.  I know kline made a few, maybe mth.  But most everything I see is either On3, On30, or three rail.  Actually, there are a LOT of three rail Shays on the market.  I've always liked the shay, and I like 2 rail or o5w for specifics.  Is it possible, and what would it take to convert a lionel or mth shay to std 2 rail?  Has anyone here performed this?

Thank you.

The K-Line 2 truck shay is over scale.

Brass geared locomotives tend to be hit or miss electrically and mechanically, mostly miss.

MTH has made their 3 and 4 truck Shays in 2 rail.  The 4 truck shay came out early enough that the 2 rail versions were conventional DC.  All the later 2 rail versions are either Proto-Sound 2 (AC/DC/DCS) or Proto-Sound 3 (AC/DC/DCS/DCC).

The MTH Climax is also available in 2 rail Proto 2 and Proto 3.

P.S.  I liked your chase scene from Beacon Hill to Lake Union.  We might have to take a look at that on the forum for the street running.

MTH offered both their 3 truck and 4 truck shays in their 2013 volume 2 catalog.  The shays shipped earlier this year.  They offered them in both three rail and 2 rail versions.  The 2 rail models have product numbers ending in -2.  MTH tends not to make too many 2 rail versions of locomotives beyond those that are preordered so I would go shopping for one sooner rather than later if you want one.

The shays are listed on p. 85 of the catalog.

If you do a search for Premier Shays on the MTH product locator you get three pages of locomotives.

Click on a particular product, click the find it button on the product page you can find a retailer who has a 2 rail Shay in stock.

Like everything else from MTH the shays are reliable runners, good pullers and usually run smoothly down to 2 or 3 smph.  MSRP in the last catalog was $1149.95 for 2 rail.  You can likely do a little better if you shop around soon.

Max Gray imported a 3-truck 2R Shay modeled on the Western Maryland Shay which occasionally you see at swap meets or on ebay. I have one and I am not interested in parting with it. It is a great engine.
