While visiting my cousin this winter, her Christmas decorations were still up, along with her American Flyer 356 "Silver Bullet" around the tree. Her original AF transformer no longer works. I bought her a K-Line AC 20 watt transformer at the Wheaton swap meet.
My concern is that 20 watts seems a bit wimpy.
But it's only a circle of track under the tree, nothing more.

I'd guess the original AF transformer has some numbers on it giving its power output capability whether it be W(atts), A(mps), VA(Volt-Amps), etc.. Unless she already tossed it, have her look for numbers like that...or the model number which you should be able to look up to get the specs.

THe 356 Siller Bullet from 1953 was packed with a No. 1 1/2 transformer rated at 45 watts. See this page.

Definitely wimpy. Gilbert never had anything that low.
I think the K-Line K-950 20VA transformer was underrated, it should do fine with that set.
