I have a pair of Atlas O 3-rail Dash 8 39B diesels in the BC Rail paint scheme. One diesel is powered, and the other is unpowered. I bought the engines back in 2004 and I have been collecting engines and cars ever since. It has only been withing the last year (2024) that I finally made a layout with the help of some great friends. I have slowly been taking trains out of their original packing and starting to run them. The track and wiring is done for the most part but no building or scenery have been started. It is a single level layout but that is OK because I'm getting a little old to be climbing around in the basement. Anyway, would someone be able to explain why the dummy unit has pickup rollers? The lights do not work (should they?), no electro couplers and there are no electric motors or sound. I would appreciate any enlightenment. The dummy unit has no instructions. But neither do I. At least my lights do work, and I make sounds. Thanks for any help.

The trucks used on the dummy are the same trucks used on the powered. They even have the gearing in them. It comes down to only having one product or production process for both powered/unpowered. Being that it does have the pick-ups, you can always add lighting but it would be constant unless some electronics were also added (simple manual on/off switch.
Thank you for the reply. Now I feel better knowing the reasoning behind the trucks being there.
Atlas O was the only mfg to have the middle rail p/u on their dummies. MTH you had to buy the lighting kit and Lionel had to hunt their parts site for the p/u screws, Etc.
The lights work.
Look for the switch to turn on the lights.
You can add command control boards to non powered diesel engine-electric motor locomotive models from ATLAS to control couplers, lights, and add a smoke unit.

There are no switches to control the lights.

I had a couple 3-rail un-powered SD40's that had switches for headlight/reverse light and class lights. Maybe the Dash 8's are different.

If you're going to add command control to a dummy to control these features then you might as well add motors and a speaker and make it a powered unit.

Yes, SD40 and GP7/9 had lights
