I just completed a service (re-wire, new brushes, overall cleaning...) on a newly acquired tender. It wants to whistle, but it "screeches" more than whistles. I should note that prior to the service I did put it on the track and noticed the relay was functioning but no movement of the armature. I read through the Greenburg repair manual but can't seem to associate any of the trouble shooting issues with the screeching sound. Any suggestions?

"Screeching" always "screams" to me "I have a dry bushing or a worn bushing on either one or both armature shaft bushings".... Try some Labelle 107 or similar on both ends of the armature shaft and see if operation improves and quiet down to proper whistle sound/
Armature Bushing/Bearings - may need oil or replacement.

so I suspect a couple of light drops of the lube I used (Omega) is too light for the job...I'll get my hands on the Labelle Product at my local hobby shop and give it a try. appreciate the timely reply
BMORAN4 - you had me confused for a second, my tender has the WS-66 Brush Plate Assembly. I wasn't able to remove the armature so it could be the Ball Bearing WS-106 or Bearing (housing) WS-107 is in need of replacement. My Greenburg manual identifies a Grease Retainer WS-53, but no mention of a Wick
@JKK, didn't mean to confuse you - just going off of your statement of having a 2466W which is reported to have the WS-125 motor leading to the parts breakdown previously brought to your attention:
With the WS-78/85 style and similar, you are correct that the armature is captured and the repair more difficult. It involves removing the cover assembly and gasket and drive studs to access bearings and bushings for replacement. Not impossible, but not elementary.
Key term in your reply: "not elementary" manual talks about using a pair of side cutting pliers to get under and pry up the (8) groove-pins/drive studs...not sure I'm ready to attempt this "feat".
Pictures always work - thanks. I did add a couple of drops with a needle point and I noticed improvement, I think I might need a heavier weight oil though. again thanks to all for the feedback.
