The fasteners are a sort of spiral threaded "nail" called a drive stud (screw). They fasten into the roof and hold on the ends, which in turn hold the whole thing together. With luck, you can gently (but very firmly) pull them out with a slight left twist. It is not easy to get a grip on the heads and you can damage the bakelite if they do not easily "unscrew" as you pull. They are designed to go in, not come out. Good luck!

 

This style of fastener is used on boxcar door guides and brakewheels, albeit much shorter and smaller.
