i have a 3rd rail m1a w/ tmcc. on the side of the engine there is a switch for the smoke machine labeled. Conv/ off/tmcc. In the tmcc position the engine will not smoke. Not even a little. In fact I don't even hear the fan. with the switch in conventional. And while the rest of the engine is controlled by tmcc. it smokes great. Any suggestion with where I start to troubleshoot.

Switch wiring, but I would say first...can you turn smoke on and off when in conventional position with TMCC?
As an example Lionel wired most TMCC engines such that off was off regardless. On was on in conventional and TMCC controlled in TMCC.
So maybe a simple switch labeling issue. G
With the switch set to "tmcc" have you tried AUX1,9 to turn the smoke on? If it was turned off at some point with AUX1,8 then I believe that command is retained until changed.
