So I have some limited tinplate, consisting of one Marx CV and a few short cars to go behind it, and one 249e and about a half dozen cars for it. I would like to have a larger O tinplate loco but the wheel arrangement and looks of the current offerings have kept me from pulling the trigger.

Is it possible to adapt a different drive train, like that of a pacific or Hudson into a shell like a 263?  I am thinking about trying to take a working drive train from a slightly more modern loco, swap the drivers with tinplate style wheels and mounting it inside a tinplate shell.

 I don't know if this is just crazy talk or not. I like the look of the detail laden AF BrassPiper, but I am not going standard gauge. I think I will suffocate holding my breath for Lionel or Mth to come out with a wheel arrangement that looks right.

For now this is more musings and day dreams than a solid course of action .

Has anyone else basically rolled their own tinplate steamer? I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

so far, I've only done one tinplate engine, a 259E I rebuilt from a shell.I was planning on doing a six drivered motor for it, but found a good 1684 motor at a show for $10 I couldn't pass up. I've done several die cast Pre and Postwar steamers. Including a 4-8-4 I made from two junk 1666 Lionel shells. These are fairly easy to make what you want, pick up some junkers and have at it!

Using the red wheel drivers, but ending up with six drivers instead of 4.  Also potentially looking for smaller lead truck wheels to build a 4 wheel lead truck.  Trailing truck could 2 or 4 wheel depending on what looks better with the remaining space.

Preferably this whole miracle makeover would happen with needing to stretch the boiler.  Anyway, no concrete plans right now as I already have a pile of projects that aren't finished, but this is what I was thinking about.
