They already have that whistle recorded. Its a Hancock 3 chime which is the same whistle 844 and 3985 have.
Maybe it's just me...but what I 'hear' of 4014 beats what I remember hearing of 3985.
Could be just the overall thing changing the whole impression too.
Either way that Big Boy is AWESOME!
So I surfed a little and found examples of the Hancock...I found a recording of 3985 which had more of the higher pitch...4014 has got a big bottom end to it that just suits it.
Cool stuff.
Sound will vary a bit. Steam pressure, load on the loco, wear on the whistle, weather etc.
I agree - the 4014 sound suits this beast. So, all the techno-babble aside, I don't care if its sound comes from half pressure, full pressure, no pressure, the moon's position tonight, etc. - it would be awesome if the 4014 sound made it into an upgrade for the Vision BB and future productions!

Actually, the Lionel Vision Line Big Boy has the correct whistle and it sounds great! OTOH, the new MTH Premier Big Boy whistle sounds like a wounded cow, they really need to do something with that one!

GRJ - the VLBB does sounds really good - but the horn in the video clip, at least to my ear, just seems deeper, throatier, and more powerful. Maybe because it's the real thing ....
I think the speakers would have to be around 12" to get that sound!
2014 Visionline whistle.
4014's whistle will sound different if/ when Ed ever really works the locomotive. The whistle is mounted so it uses superheated steam but 4014 hasn't been working anywhere near hard enough for it to produce superheated steam. Right now it's using saturated steam.
Hancock 3 Chimes all have their own unique sound to them. Take a look at this from the Union Pacific Historical Society, and you can hear just how different all of these Hancocks sound!

This was a characteristic of all steam whistles. The exact same design can sound much different. For example, I'm sure we're all very familiar with the Nathan 6 Chime on NKP 765, but for a short time at the end of 2018, a guest whistle of the same design was mounted on her. There were some similarities between them, but the sound was still very different. Here's a video of mine showcasing this guest whistle...hear the difference?
