I have a friends post war 520 electrified engine here and need some information. Was there two contact rollers on the bottom of this engine? Can rollers be added or changed without removing the collector plate? Does anyone have a diagram for this engine? Olsens has only the parts list. Any help is appreciated.

Rob: Sorry I don’t have that wiring diagram either just the parts list which identifies the collector plate as part #2034-126.  The first page of the 2034 steam locomotive service manual pages shows a bottom view of the collector assembly and it has 2 rollers.

It’s been a long time since I worked on one of those and I don’t remember whether or not it has to be disassembled.

There should be two rollers on the 520.  The rollers can be removed without removing the contact plate.  The roller assembly is clamped between the fiber insulator and a bronze spring on the top side of the fiber plate.  The spring has a slot in it that captures a tab on the roller assembly.  The bronze spring has to be lifted up a little to release or allow instaltion of the roller assembly.  You have to becareful not to bend the bronze spring or it will not hold the roller assemble tight.  If the spring is bent, then the fiber plate will have to be removed.  This works the same as the many locomotives with the sliding shoe.  This is illistrated in the service manual pages for the 2034.

I'm late getting here, but David has, I believe, answered your question more than adequately.

Although I thank Don for the compliment, I really don't regard myself as an expert on the 520 Boxcab, but I do love those little buggers.  I have several of them, along with the more recent K-Line by Lionel enhanced repros.  Will also buy a couple of the RMT versions when they are available.

I'm the founder (way back many years ago in the AOL forum era) of the "Friends of the 520" society that I like to think was instrumental in getting the 520 reproduced in more recent years.  I am kind of proud of that!
