Hi guys,

Just purchased one of these monsters new in box from someone who bought new and kept in a climate controlled storage room since 1992. This is my first Lionel of this age and I believe was manufactured by a 3rd party for lionel. It is a beautiful model and was clearly never run/out of box. That said on inspection it appears that there is some paint on top of loco and on side of tender that almost appears like there are overspray particles, ie it is sort of rough and blistered in patches. It looks to me like something from the factory and upon looking more closely at some of these for sale online/eBay I believe I may be seeing something similar on other units. Can anyone let me know if this was typical for this model or did I just get a bad one, as it really looks like a factory “flaw”. Can provide pics if helpful! Thanks as always!

Bill, I believe what you are seeing is referred to as zinc pest or zinc rot. As you have said, it appears as rough or blistered patches under the paint.

Many of these 6-18010 engines have it. I have one. My tender is almost perfect, but the engine has a number of blisters on it.

As you said, if you look at pictures of ones on sale on eBay, you can see the problem, which varies from engine to engine.
