6 wheel idler gear replacement

I have got to replace an idler gear and pin on a 6 wheel powered truck. Actually the pin and gear are gone. It was bought used this way. Other than the obvious is there any certain procedure or tricks that need to be known? Not sure I can get the gear in without removing the mid non-flange wheel.

Picture would help. The 2R-3R trucks had a plastic insert that the metal pin inserted into with flat head that captured idle gear. Also be aware there are different size idlers. G
