what would happen if i put in a 4-ohm speaker in a mth loco instead og the 8-hohm that it has? just wandering?

You'd be overloading the amplifier with too low an impedance. Is this a PS/1 locomotive? Sounds like it with an 8 ohm speaker.

You could try putting it in series with a 2 ohm resistor resulting in a 6 ohm load. That shouldn't cut out too much power. John can correct me if I am wrong.

Locosounds used 8 ohm also. I don't think you want to add resistor when 8 ohm speakers impedance matched to audio amp. A resistor doesn't produce any sounds. G
this is a premier ff40 with ps2
What vintage of PS/2? Early 5V PS/2 boards use a 16 ohm speaker, later 3V PS/2 boards use a 4 ohm speaker. If you're talking about the 16 ohm speaker, bad idea to replace it with an 8 ohm speaker.
I gues i will leave them have 2 alone.
