What is the function for the 8 pin connection for a ps3 upgrade board. Are the unused pin able to run marker lights, cab lights etc

Pin outs are dependent on the sound file.
The instructions in the kit map out what to connect generally.
Beacon, markers, ditch lights, see attached diagram. As Joe say, you're dependent on these being supported in the sound file. In general, most support the markers, many the ditch files, but I have only used the beacon a couple of times.

Can we order partial harness bits like that 8 pin connector and the associated lights? Be great to add in some features to my older trains.

What PS-3 board are you talking about? The 8 pin on a PS-3 boiler board or diesel board is AC power and Motor function.
If your talking PS-2 or PS-32 which is a top board that mimics PS-2. G
