Gents and ladies,

This Christmas season I have been working on a FasTrack 072 ceiling type layout that runs completely around my new Train Room/Bar area of our new home.  With the initial screwing down of the FasTrack big 072 corners, we tested the Lionel Scale TMCC JLC GG-1 Engine that Dave (Rocky Mountaineer) provided for us last Christmas Season.

Got to say Rocky Mountaineer takes great care of his O Gauge Trains and when he decides to sell something it is in 1st class shape.  The Scale GG-1 runs like glass on the new FT over head ceiling layout, pulling 8-10 lighted passenger Cars, people and all with absolutely no problems.  The big Engine looks fantastic with absolutely no blemishes on the big Brunswick Green Engine what so ever.  This engine can really Fly even pulling a big load, a way cool big time engine.

Test ran the big GG-1 in Conventional mode to make sure of all the clearances on the curves, seems I did all the 072 Track design Engineering correctly, even in the S type corners of the new layout.  I do have some big Tin Plate Engines but this Lionel TMCC Brunswick Green Scale JLC is one seriously big Engine that take up a lot of space while running thru the 072 curves.

Thanks again Dave for a great piece of O Gauge equipment.

Dave,

Thank you for the word on the other Dave (Rocky Mountain).  He has always seemed like a real good, stand up guy!  The GG-1 pulling that consist looks great up there.

Somehow I missed that you put 072 curves up there on your 'Hanging Shelf' topic.  Maybe I should get some 072 curves, take out the track closest to the edge of my 12" deep shelf layout, and run some trains I won't be running on the new to be built Blackwater Canyon Line with it's sharper mountain curves!

Mark Boyce,

You should have no problems if you are using 12" wide shelving, even with 2 sets of tracks. As you can see in the picture I chose to stay with one set of FasTrack and used 8" and 10" wide shelving, depending on where the train was running.   Actually the 2 long 12' straight sections per each side of the room were only a little over 7 1/2" wide.   I wanted to be able to view the big Trains nicely as they ran the FasTrack up near the high ceiling.   I got the engineering effect I was looking for, by using the less wide shelving on the straights.   The one thing I do caution about when building the corners with the 072 curves, the corner Triangle Structures take up a lot of space when done correctly, I considered just cutting a trestle type Bridge work, however it did not make the room look like I wanted.  My FasTrack is almost perfectly level because of the corner Triangle pieces  and all the different Trains run like glass on the 1st and 2nd Generation FasTrack.

Have fun upgrading your layout with 072 curves, definitely a better engineering format for the self ceiling layouts.

Ditto: I was thinking of Rocky Mountaineer (David) too.  However, I just played like a lemming walking off the cliff!  LOL

Dave,

I will agree with you on the single 072 will work fine.  I have 2 of those jogs in the Wall like you show in the first photograph of this last post.  Those wete the hardest places to get my clearances right.  The four corners were no problem.

Right now I have extra rolling stock stored on the second track since I got out the Christmas trains.  Once they are put away for the year, I think I will remove the second track and broaden the curves.  I’ll be doing what a lot of prototype railroads have done.  LOL

Jim R,

I used the same 8x10 metal shelf Brackets that I picked up at Home Depot, bending them straight, then I used some small Right Angle brackets which I custom bent to exact size for joining the Triangle long legs to the original shelving.   You could also go with the 8"x12" brackets which are even stronger, because they are a little thicker made steel brackets, however they are more expensive to build with.

Hi Dave!  Thanks for the kind words (and to everyone else, thanks for the kind words as well).  Always super glad to see these trains find a new home when it's time to thin out the collection.  And it looks like you're putting that GG-1 to good use this year.  Enjoy many happy hours of smooth operation with it.  Those JLC locomotives were some of Lionel's finest in their day.  And quite frankly, they still can hold their own quite well even compared to today's VisionLine products -- especially from a detail and fit-and-finish perspective.

Have a Merry Christmas, everyone!!!

David
