I always wanted a nice display case for some of my nicer postwar pieces. I looked in antique shops, flea markets, garage sales all to no avail.
Well I got lucky last month when me and my wife went for a ride out to Hunterdon County NJ.I decided to head out to Readington NJ to show my wife a store that my Grandparents used to own back in the early 1960s.
The place was a general store when my Grandmother ran it,then about 30 years ago it became a antique and craft store by the present owners. I was driving by the place and noticed it was closed down and happen to see the lady who now owned the place getting her mail.
I stopped to talk to her and mentioned that I used to spend a few weeks in the summer there when I was a kid when the place was owned by my grandparents.
The present owner was getting up in years and closed the store but still lived in the house we made some polite chit chat and after about 15 minutes I said good bye and was about to drive off when I thought about the candy case that was in the store back in the day...I put my truck in park and called out to her and asked if she still had the candy case ? She responded yes and asked if I wanted to buy it ? because it was for sale.
She let me in the store and there it was right where I remember it,same place right off the kitchen. I could hear my Grandmothers voice in my head (she was a crabby old girl) on a Sunday afternoon after dinner screeching out "HURRY UP AND PICK SOMETHING I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO THINK IM OPEN !!!"The place was closed on Sundays but she would let me get a box of something out of the case...I usually went with the Chocolate Babies or the Red Hot Dollars.
Now I had the chance to own this thing ... She told me the price and I looked at my wife and she said to go for it !
We made arrangements to pick it up last Saturday and bring it home before the storm...and now that things are calming down around here im just getting around to fill it.
Here is a picture of the place in 1964 when my Grandparents owned it....
This is the interior of the store now the case is on the left...
This is a shot of the place now...Thats the NS mainline right there (former LVRR)
Well here is the case in my basement....just playing around so far gonna go with vintage HO
on the shelf and Postwar Lionel on the bottom and maybe try to find a spot for some Chocolate
Babies for old time sake !!!
